The clean-up of the Indonesian capital has begun - after four days of unrest.
The signs of widespread rioting was evident as smoke from shopping mall fires that killed hundreds of looters filled the air.
Troops patrolled in armoured personnel carriers and had orders to shoot at unruly crowds.
Witness and media accounts said on Saturday that rioting has spread to other Indonesian cities including the second-largest metropolis of Surabaya.
President Suharto was quoted as repeating his willingness to step down, if that is the will of the Indonesian people.
The 76-year-old Indonesian leader also plans to reshuffle his Cabinet, speaker of Parliament Harmoko said after meeting with the president.
Most Indonesians are likely to see such a move as purely cosmetic.
