Here is an old clip of Quentin Tarantino talking about his views on film composers, and particularly why he didn't want to work with them. I haven't been able to find where the original interview is from, but it is from at least 2008 (perhaps earlier) and of course his views have changed after working with Morricone on The Hateful Eight.
I have pretty mixed feelings about his comments. On the one hand, it's clear that utilizing pre-existing music works for him and it's hard to imagine original score working as well, or better, than the licensed music Tarantino uses. Wanting absolute control makes sense, and it works!
That said, on the other hand the comments seem ignorant of the scoring process and there are some dismissive comments about film composers. With respect to process, Tarantino mentions how a composer would come in at the end and he would be stuck with the score. It's true that often composers are coming in last (and can have only a couple weeks to score, if not less), but at this point Tarantino had enough cache and power to avoid this. Ironically, Morricone often scored pre-production, without seeing the film, thereby allowing the director to use the music how they want - avoiding the very issues Tarantino complains of (and is what Morricone did on The Hateful Eight). The comments about a composer never being able to match pre-existing music seems like heightened temp love, while the statements that some are prima donnas who don't listen are pretty broad straight that overly negatively portray composers, showing some issues about trust in collaborators. Ultimately, it's nice that he seems to have changed his mind over the years, though it would be interesting to see an updated interview on this.
