Nico Erik Rosberg was born on June 27, 1985, in Wiesbaden, Germany, into a family destined for speed. His father, Keke Rosberg, was the 1982 Formula 1 World Champion, and his mother, Sina, is German. Although Nico was born in Germany, he grew up mainly in Monaco, surrounded by glamour and engines, and from a young age was exposed to the world of motorsport.
From the age of four, his father took him to karting circuits, and by six he was already competing officially. His childhood was marked by discipline, multilingualism (he speaks five languages: German, English, French, Italian, and Spanish), and academic demands, as his parents required him to maintain good grades in order to keep racing.
Keke Rosberg, in addition to being his inspiration, was his first manager and mentor, guiding him every step of the way and teaching him the importance of mental and physical preparation.
First Steps in Motorsport: From Karting to GP2
Nico shone in French and European karting, winning regional and national championships. His competitive mindset was forged from childhood, even racing against Lewis Hamilton, with whom he shared a karting team and built a friendship and rivalry that would define his career.
At 16, Nico made the leap to single-seaters, winning the Formula BMW ADAC championship in 2002 with nine victories in twenty races. This achievement allowed him to test a Williams Formula 1 car, becoming the youngest driver to do so at the time.
In 2003 and 2004, he competed in the Formula 3 Euro Series with Team Rosberg, the team founded by his father, achieving wins and podiums. In 2005, Nico was crowned champion of the inaugural GP2 Series season with ART Grand Prix, beating drivers like Heikki Kovalainen and Alexandre Prémat. This title was key to opening the doors to Formula 1.
Formula 1 Debut: Williams and the Learning Years
In 2006, Nico Rosberg debuted in Formula 1 with Williams, the same team with which his father became champion. His first race was the Bahrain Grand Prix, where he surprised the world by setting the fastest lap and scoring points on his debut—a rare feat for a rookie.
During his four seasons with Williams (2006-2009), Nico demonstrated talent and consistency, achieving two podiums in 2008 and being the team’s main reference during tough years. His technical ability was so remarkable that he achieved the highest score in the history of Williams’ engineering test, allowing him to contribute significantly to car development.
