Life can be exhausting. The constant pull of responsibilities, expectations, and distractions can lead to burnout, stir up emotional wounds, create conflict in relationships, and make it hard to live the life someone truly wants. Everyone deserves to feel confident in their identity and grounded in who they are.
Laurel DeVore is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Addiction Specialist at Mathews Counseling. They work with individuals, couples, and families to offer support, education, and reflection in service of creating a life that genuinely fits each person’s needs. Laurel is deeply committed to helping clients feel safe, seen, and prioritized. Trauma-informed care is central to their approach, and they recognize how often people minimize or dismiss their own experiences, even when those experiences have had a profound impact.
They work with children ages 11 and up, adolescents, young adults, mid-lifers, and older adults. Laurel believes strongly in meaningful transformation through intentional steps and collaborative goal-setting.
Their sessions are person-centered, allowing clients to set the pace and shape the structure. Some sessions may feel more structured, while others are more open and exploratory, reflecting the reality that people are constantly evolving. Laurel draws from a range of approaches including strengths-based and solution-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, internal family systems, Gestalt, and narrative therapy.
Laurel’s background includes extensive experience in community mental health, providing individual, couple, and family counseling to clients ranging in age from early childhood through later adulthood. They have worked in homes, community settings, prison systems, offices, and group homes, experiences that have shaped their ability to work with diverse populations. Laurel holds particular passion for working with parents, teenagers, queer individuals, and people with histories of substance use or justice involvement. They are LGBTQIA+ affirming, ethical nonmonogamy affirming, poly affirming, kink affirming, and ground their work in an anti-racist, decolonizing perspective.
They earned their Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from UNC Wilmington in 2016, with double minors in Leadership Studies and Theater. Laurel went on to complete their Master of Social Work at UNC Wilmington in 2018, earning a certificate in Substance Use Disorders and Addictions. They are also a Certified Clinical Supervisor Intern and provide supervision to newly licensed associate clinicians in social work and addictions.
Outside of clinical work, Laurel proudly identifies as a self-described nerd. They enjoy video games, reading, Studio Ghibli films, and all things fantasy. They love traveling and have visited places including India, Belize, and Jamaica, with Greece and Japan at the top of their future travel list. Hiking and connecting with nature are essential parts of how they create space and peace in their own life. Their spirituality has evolved significantly over the years and remains an important part of their identity and self-care practices.
Laurel currently sees clients via telehealth and in person at the Durham office. For those ready to explore, connect authentically, and implement meaningful strategies for change, they welcome the opportunity to work together.
