Ten days later, German machine-gun fire in a vineyard shattered his right leg. Awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart, he endured 18 months of agonizing recovery. Post-war, he moved to Hollywood, became James Arness, and in 1955 was cast as Marshal Matt Dillon in "Gunsmoke." For 20 seasons, Arness embodied steadfast strength, all while hiding constant pain from his war wound. He walked briskly on set, while his co-star faked a limp.
