Firefighters Respond to Vacant Apartment Fire in North Fargo
FARGO, ND (September 7, 2012) -- On Friday, September 7, at 4:22 a.m., the Fargo Fire Department responded to multiple reports of an apartment building on fire at 1900 Dakota Drive near NDSU campus. When firefighters arrived on scene there was heavy fire and flames were reaching approximately 40 feet above the structure. One firefighter describes the flames as looking like "fire tornados" coming out of the building. At that time, it was apparent the building was unoccupied because it was under construction; however, there were other apartment buildings in close proximity that were evacuated for a short time as a safety precaution. Because the building was unoccupied and there was already heavy fire that was out of control, the decision was made to save as much property as possible fighting the fire from the outside while protecting other properties close to the fire. Firefighters are still on scene working to extinguish any hot spots in the rubble of the fire to make sure it does not reignite. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.
Additional response information:
• Approximately 150,000 gallons of water was used to extinguish the fire.
• A second alarm was called for this fire which included
o 25 firefighters
o 4 Fargo Fire Engines
o 1 Fargo Fire Rescue Truck
o 1 Fargo Fire Ladder Truck
o 1 Moorhead Fire Engine
o Command Staff
• Fire sprinklers were not yet installed in the apartment building.
The fire is currently under investigation. The Fargo Fire Department will have more information as it becomes available. Firefighters and Fire Inspectors will remain on scene for most of the day.
