How to Make an EASY 1830's Bonnet and Pelerine!

In this video, I turn stash to treasure, challenging myself to make a Romantic Era bonnet and pelerine cape using only stash material in a week and a half. It's a tall task! Will I make it?

While I've done millinery before, this was my first bonnet, so this video is more of a let's-figure-this-out-together type versus a real how-to, as I sew my way into some fabulous acessories for a Victorian event in Galveston. (And yes, I know 1830's is Romantic and not Victorian, but it was the closest I could get with time and budget restraints 😉)

Pelerines were quite popular in the 1830's. They were small capelets worn over the dress, and could be made out of delicate lace or cotton organdy. In the 1830's, they were also often made using fabric that matched the gown itself, and often heavily trimmed. Pelerines are quick and easy to make. This one--not including the lace, which I had to hand sew--took less than 20 minutes to complete. WOOAW, as Owen Wilson would say.

In the 1830's, bonnets had very large brims and an excess of crazy decorations. I mean...one had to balance out the craziness of the rest of the outfit, right? I was limited to using what I had around the house already, but hopefully I managed to make a bonnet with sufficient frill!

Millinery can be a daunting task, and definitely is not something a complete beginner should tackle. A lot of it needs to be done by hand, and wrangling buckram and millinery wire can be a bit of a challenge. But if you've made at least one corset or pair of stays, you're probably ready to tackle one! I used a pattern from Black Snail, and they do a very good job of explaining how it's done. Give it a shot!
