As sports fans, we are constantly looking for the next two-sport star. We still talk fondly about how good of an athlete Bo Jackson was, splitting time between the Royals and the Raiders after a great career at Auburn. Deion Sanders famously spent time in both the MLB and the NFL because he was just that overpowered as an athlete. Even Heisman winners like Jameis Winston and Charlie Ward spent time in other sports, with Jameis being a great college pitcher, and Charlie Ward ending up in the NBA because the NFL wasn't quite ready for a scrambling QB yet. We're still obsessed with it today---how many times have you heard the question of how good of a tight end LeBron James could have been if he'd signed with the Cowboys during that NBA lockout, or if Brock Lesnar really could have made it as a defensive tackle in the NFL?
The most common route these players take is that they choose one of those sports and play them in college and high school. The most obvious current one is DJ Uiagalelei, who decided to follow a career in football instead of baseball. The jury's out on whether or not that was a good decision.
But there's one player who could have been the next great college football quarterback in 2011, who instead chose to become one of the biggest busts in recent MLB draft history. What can we learn from the story of Bubba Starling, and can we finally decide whether or not it's worth it to look into these decisions of one sport or another?
