See how I paint these watercolor elephants with a loose underwash and then defining the form and the shadows with crisp darks.
Starting with a line drawing I put in the lighter colors very loosely using lots of water and softening the edges. I let the color bleed through the edges of the drawing making the whole thing soft and lively.
The darks go in on the next layer with just enough to define the forms and shadows with a little softening to show the curve of the trunks, legs and body.
The final stage adds in some subtle value changes to increase the sense of form without losing the energy of the initial washes.
