The baby shower invitation had arrived six weeks ago, cream-colored with delicate pink ribbons. My sister Elena had organized everything—she always did. She'd reserved the private dining room at Lucia's, the upscale Italian restaurant downtown where our family celebrated every milestone. She'd chosen the menu, coordinated the guest list, and sent me a link to a registry she'd created on my behalf.
"Since you probably don't have time to do it yourself," she'd said on the phone. "With work and everything."
By "work and everything," she meant my job as a freelance graphic designer. At least, that's what I'd told them years ago, and they'd never asked for more details. It was easier that way.
