Please join me and my friends Kellie and Mike as we explore an early 1880s tabby foundation in Satsuma, FL. We begin with the knowledge that the earliest documented owner of the property acquired it in 1879. But because tabby--a primitive cement made from an aggregate of burnt shell, sand, and water--was used as the construction material it raises an interesting question: Could this have been built by the British in the mid 1700s?
Numerous broken bottles, crocks, barrel straps, and brass artifacts are recovered that help tell the interesting story of what purpose the original structure may have served. Along the way Master Bladesmith, Steve Schwarzer, examines a rusty knife found at the site and offers his opinion on the age and its historical use.
