Today is exciting. I picked up an Oculus Rift S. You've probably seen my original HTC Vive that i usually use on this channel and I probably won't be getting rid of it anytime soon for a few reasons.
The 1st being that my Vive is like fully upgraded. For one it’s got the deluxe audio head strap which if you don't know doesn't come with the Vive it's a $100 upgrade that adds a better strap and integrated headphone it's well worth it. I had the original strap on my previous Vive and it works but isn't nearly as comfortable or even very good at holding the Vive to your face the added headphones are just a bonus as using external headphones can be annoying to fit over the straps on the original band.
It's also got the wireless kit which is probably the biggest reason I won't get rid of my Vive. The wires on the floor are just total immersion killers. I mean who wants to trip over a cable or have to periodically untangle the cord from you turning in circles in VR.
I could also upgrade to the index controllers later on if they ever get back in stock. I mean the controllers are my biggest issue with the Vive. They kind of suck, don't get me wrong they feel great in the hand they are nice and weighty and don't feel like toys that I might break like the Oculus touch controllers do.
My biggest problem with the Vive controllers is just the track pads. They are just terrible. I honestly don't know what HTC was thinking when they made those. They work and they technically add 4 buttons to the front face of the controller, but you know what happens when you play vr for hours… You sweat and you know what sucks when you sweat .. anything that uses capacitive touch functionality.
The Rift controllers on the other hand have actual buttons like i don't know… controllers. They even have thumbsticks!!! That's not to say they are perfect though. In the brief time I've had them today I've noticed one of the worst design designs i can think of.
So to preface this I want you to think about a battery cover. Like the one on the back of a tv remote or an xbox controller or something similar. How are those held on? With a little plastic clip that only really moves if you want it to.
Perfect design no one should ever change it….but Oculus did. They battery cover is on the top of the controller you know right where this part of your hand sits. (Show hand) that may not have been to bad i would have put it at the end of the controller but that's just me… so they put it on top and … it is held on by magnets. My wife and i both had the cover come off in our hand while playing beat saber and for me it was worse in blade and sorcery.
I guess its not that big of a deal but… why do that. I think both Oculus and HTC just wanted to try something different because they thought they had to, and while i commend them trying … just use thumb sticks HTC and Oculus just use normal battery covers.
That being said the Rift s does have better visual quality than the Vive i mean of course it does it has a higher resolution per eye. I'm loving it so far there are details that i completely missed in games when using the Vive that i now see perfectly with the rift s. Not to mention looking at my own game in the rift almost brought a tear to my eye. It looks even better in VR than i thought it did.
Thanks for watching!!
