The Life and Legacy of Sheikh Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili | The Mystic of Divine Knowledge
Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili was born in 1196 CE in the village of Ghumara near Sabta (Ceuta) in Morocco.
From a young age, he was known for his deep intelligence, noble character, and intense desire for knowledge.
He traveled across North Africa in search of spiritual truth — studying with scholars, ascetics, and saints — until he met **Sheikh Abd al-Salam ibn Mashish**, the great Moroccan saint who became his spiritual master.
Under Ibn Mashish’s guidance, al-Shadhili learned that true knowledge is not found in books alone, but in the *purification of the heart* and **sincerity of intention**.
His teacher told him, “When you meet God’s people, be humble. When you meet the world’s people, be dignified.”
Before sending him out to teach, Ibn Mashish said:
Obeying his teacher’s command, al-Shadhili traveled to **Tunisia**, and later settled in **Alexandria, Egypt**.
There, he began spreading a message of *spiritual balance* — a Sufism not of isolation, but of active life in society.
He taught his followers to **remember God in every moment**, to live honestly, work diligently, and serve humanity — all while keeping the heart connected to the Divine.
His teachings emphasized **dhikr (remembrance of God)**, **tawakkul (trust in God)**, and **service to others**.
He rejected extremes — neither complete withdrawal from the world nor total attachment to it.
One of his famous supplications, known as the *Hizb al-Bahr* or *Litany of the Sea*, is still recited today by travelers and seekers for protection and spiritual strength.
In *1258 CE**, Sheikh Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili* set out for Hajj (pilgrimage)**.
On his way, he became ill and passed away near the **Red Sea**, in a place called **Humaythira**, between Egypt and Sudan.
To this day, his shrine remains a destination for seekers from around the world.
The legacy of Sheikh Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili lives on — through his teachings, his supplications, and the spiritual lineage that continues to inspire millions.
He showed that the path to God is not only through solitude, but through *service, sincerity, and remembrance* in every aspect of life.
“Be with God as if there were no people,” he said,
“and be with people as if you had no ego.”
