Indigenizing Nursing Education: Moving Beyond Inclusion Toward Transformation
In this presentation, Dr. Cheryl Pollard, a nursing scholar at the University of Regina, explores what it means to Indigenize nursing education—moving far beyond token gestures and toward deep, systemic transformation that honours Indigenous knowledge, values, and worldviews.
Together, we examine:
🌿 Why the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) called out nursing education and all the Calls to Action that should guide meaningful change within nursing education.
🌿 The importance of cultural safety and cultural humility in preparing nurses to deliver respectful, equitable, and relationship‑centered care.
🌿 The essential role of Indigenous Peoples, whose diverse histories, languages, and worldviews enrich healthcare education.
🌿 Examples of authentic curriculum integration — including land‑based learning, Indigenous case studies, and teaching partnerships.
🌿 Real barriers and real opportunities that schools, educators, and institutions face when shifting away from colonial models of teaching.
🌿 Concrete steps educators can take now, from reviewing course outlines to strengthening community relationships.
This session invites educators, students, and healthcare leaders to reflect, unlearn, and take action. Indigenization is not a checkbox—it's a journey of humility, collaboration, and continuous learning that leads to safer, more inclusive healthcare for all.
✨ Stay curious, stay focused, and keep asking questions as we work together toward transformation, reconciliation, and weaving a balance between well-being, our relationship with the land—our environment, our identities, and nursing.
