Designing a Modular Synth System for Live Performance Part 4 | Clocks. Pulses, and Musical Time

Описание: In this episode, we discuss clocks, pulses, and musical time in relation to modular synthesis. We start with a refresher course on rhythmic nomenclature, moving from basic 4/4 grooves through odd and compound time signatures, swing, and polyrhythms. The stage is then set for seeing why it is useful to have pulses in many different subdivisions of the master clock pulse.

After the crash course in rhythm theory, we look at the pencil and paper clock system I designed, followed by seeing and hearing the real thing in action. I explain the use of and thought process behind every element of my clock system, showing how it can generate 64th notes, beats every 64 measures, and everything in between.

There are simple musical examples peppered throughout the discussion, all of which were created on my modular.
