STORYLINE:
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met Egyptian military ruler, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, in Cairo on Saturday to discuss developments following a Palestinian bid for membership of the United Nations.
Palestinian diplomats are trying to muster support for a UN Security Council vote in New York on November 11 on their bid for membership in the global body, a senior Palestinian official said on Thursday.
UN diplomats said earlier this week that a Security Council committee considering the membership bid would deliver a report on that day, and that ambassadors would then decide on the next steps.
Egypt is trying to push for a unity deal between Islamic militant group Hamas and Abbas' Fatah movement.
Abbas and Hamas' leader, Khaled Mashaal, were expected to meet in Cairo in coming days to try to break the impasse that has held up a reconciliation agreement reached in the spring between the two parties.
But sceptics say a breakthrough is unlikely because of deep ideological differences.
