A research team in Duke University’s Department of Cell Biology has identified a key step in the repair of damaged lung cells that can lead to lung scarring when it goes wrong. The process is driven by a stem cell called an AT-2 cell that must stretch itself out from its original blocky shape to the long, thin shape of a pneumocyte or AT-1 cell. They found the stem cell is susceptible to DNA damage as it is stretched out. Mechanisms that impair this cell stretching process can lead to scar tissue. Understanding the lung-repair process better can improve therapies for healing from COVID-19 and other respiratory infections and injuries to prevent scarring.
