De las catorce cecas republicanas que existieron, solo nueve tuvieron el privilegio de acuñar monedas de 4 Escudos, una de las últimas en hacerlo fue la Ceca de Zacatecas. Sorprendentemente, hasta la década de los 90’s, de este éste sumamente complicado tipo solo se conocían piezas de 1862 Zs VL. En Mayo de 1990, apareció un ejemplar inédito de 1860 Zs VL en la subasta organizada por Sotheby’s, descrito en calidad F/VF. Posteriormente, en Diciembre de 1995, se subastó la primera parte de la magna colección de Pablo Gerber, ofrecida por Spink America, en ella, un segundo ejemplar se catalogó en XF y alcanzó la sorprendente cifra de US$12,100.00. Dieciséis años más tarde, un tercer ejemplar fue ofrecido por Ponterio & Associates, Sale 157 (07 de Enero, 2011), graduado en AU55, que realizó los US$26,000.00 más comisión. Tanto el ejemplar de Gerber como el ofrecido por Ponterio, fueron subastados posteriormente, el primero en 2017, graduado ahora como AU58 y el segundo en 2019, ninguna otra moneda más allá de los tres ejemplares antes mencionados había aparecido públicamente. La presente, un nuevo ejemplar y el cuarto que sale a la luz públicamente desde la primera aparición de esta fecha hace 34 años, se cree que la pieza que resguarda Banco de México en su colección puede ser la misma que se ofreció con Sotheby’s, por otro lado, el censo NGC reporta una pieza en AU Details (la cual conocemos y fue removida de joyería), por lo que podemos confirmar no más de 5 ejemplares al momento. Montadura de época con asa de bronce o cobre dorado con distinguido arreglo, cierto desgaste en puntos de contacto, así como líneas y marquitas en virtud a haberse fungido como joya. Of the fourteen republican mints that existed, only nine had the privilege of striking 4 Escudos coins, one of the last to do so was the Zacatecas Mint. Surprisingly, until the 1990's, only 1862 Zs VL pieces of this extremely complicated type were known. In May 1990, an unpublished 1860 Zs VL appeared in the auction held by Sotheby's, described in F/VF quality. Subsequently, in December 1995, the first part of the Pablo Gerber collection, offered by Spink America, was auctioned, in which a second copy was catalogued in XF and reached the astonishing figure of US$12,100.00. Sixteen years later, a third copy was offered by Ponterio & Associates, Sale 157 (January 07, 2011), graded at AU55, which realized US$26,000.00 plus commission Both the Gerber specimen and the one offered by Ponterio were subsequently auctioned, the former in 2017, now graded AU58, and the latter in 2019; no other coins beyond the three aforementioned specimens have appeared publicly.
