Nobody gave the 83-win Cardinals much of a chance to get past the Padres in the Division Series in 2006, and who could blame them? The Cardinals had fallen apart in the second half, in large part due to injuries, and were saved only by the fact that they played in the weakest division in baseball.
But, that's both why baseball is the greatest game of them all, and why you actually play the games.
In the early going, the Cardinals took advantage of Mike Piazza's inability to catch what should have been an Albert Pujols foul out, turning it into a two-run homer, and a lead they would never relinquish.
Chris Carpenter mowed down the Padres until the 7th, when he was relieved by Tyler Johnson, and a potentially game-saving play was made by rental second baseman Ronnie Belliard.
