China just approved world's first brain implant that lets patients move a robotic hand with thoughts

Описание: China on Friday approved the market release of the world’s first invasive brain-machine interface medical device, developed by Shanghai’s Neuracle.

The NEO BMI system, developed and tested locally, allows individuals to control a pneumatic glove (a wearable robotic hand) to perform daily tasks. Patients can grasp objects, eat and drink independently, using only their thoughts after a small coin-sized implant is placed in their skull. The semi-invasive brain-machine interface reduces risks by using external wireless power and avoiding brain tissue damage.

The implant site can be located in 3 minutes, with the surgery lasting around 3 hours.

Mr. Dong, paralyzed in a 2020 traffic accident, became the first patient in Shanghai to receive a fully implanted brain-machine interface in 2024. Like Mr. Dong, all 32 patients in the clinical study saw 100% improvement in hand function with no device-related issues, validating the safety and long-term potential of the minimally invasive implantation.

Shanghai is a global leader in brain-machine interface innovation, housing nearly 60 companies and capturing over half of China’s funding in the field.
