Sounds of the jungle at night

Описание: The sound of the cicadas slowly takes over the soundscape as the sun is setting over the jungles of Yunnan.

The cloud forests of Mount Gaoligong are full of life but this is not a lowland jungle. It can get pretty cold here at night, and sunlight is limited by the ever-present fog and cloud. Wildlife has to be clever about resource usage, especially when it comes to acoustic communication.

The soundscape is pretty tame during the day, with a low level insect buzz and occasional bursts of song from birds. Dawn and dusk are where the activity is at its peak. Dawn can be lush and full of birdsong (as you can hear in the other recording from this location:    • Wild China sounds - Dawn chorus in the mou...  ) while dusk is more muted and shrill. A few birds sing here and there but the main elements are the intense sounds of cicadas and other loud insects.

This sparse dusk chorus takes no more than an hour and then everything goes quiet. The only remaining sounds are the distant wash of a glacial waterfall, and the soft rustle of critters moving on the forest floor. Good night.
