PS1 Underrated Gem: Delta Force Urban Warfare -No Commentary-

Delta Force: Urban Warfare is a mission-based first person shooter released in 2002 at the end of the PS1's life. It's a branch off game of the PC series, and has a different style of play.

It's not the most perfect game of it's type, nor will it interest those who have been saturated with modern FPS games like CoD4, but DF:UW has a lot going for it for those who may still be interested in FPS games on the PS1.

The missions are objective based and have a decent amount of variety to them. It's more tactical in feel than Goldeneye, but not as tactical as Rainbox Six. It falls somewhere in the middle. You go through each level killing baddies and completing your objectives which range form planting explosives, collecting data, or even defending areas from an onslaught of enemies.

The controls take quite a bit of getting used to, but once you get them down, it's not that big of a deal. Using some of the items in the game can feel like a chore, but overall the controls don't distract form the game that much. You won't hate the game because of the controls, but then again you won't love it for them either.

The graphics are quite impressive for the PS1, but the game has some framerate issues. I even remember some people claiming the graphics were up to PS2 quality at the time, but I wouldn't go that far. They are impressive for PS1 graphics, but if only the framerate was solid like it is in the PS1 version of Quake II.

The enemy A.I. is decent. Sometimes they're pretty stupid, and other times they give you a good amount of challenge. That's another problem that some may have with the game, it can be quite challenging at times. The enemies can drain your life-bar extremely fast if they get the drop on you.

There's is also no multiplayer of any sort, but this is the PS1 we're talking about here. Multiplayer would have been nice enough, but there's only so much the system can handle.

Overall Delta Force: Urban Warfare is a fun tactical-ish objective based first person shooter that gamers who still have an interest in their PS1's should look into. It won't blow your socks off, but it's fun enough for what it is. Call of Duty whores beware, this game will look like a choppy dated turd to you, but then again, why in the hell are you looking up PS1 videos in the first place?
