This ROAD BIKE BUILD blends the BEST STEEL TUBING of the 80s with MODERN parts!

Today, Alex will show you what makes this custom steel bike unique.

Samuel, the owner, is an expert cyclist from the US who was craving an injection of 80s nostalgia.

He was looking for a bike that honored the best racing machines of his youth.

Coincidentally, Samuel got in touch with the Battaglin workshop just a few days before the release of the limited-edition Marosticana SLX.

With only 10 pieces available worldwide, these individually-numbered custom frames featured the Columbus SLX tubing.

The double-butted Columbus SLX is a special steel tubeset with a rich racing history.

In the 80s, it was the best choice for professional bikes.

In fact, the innovative design with helical reinforcements boosted stiffness only in the parts of the frame where it was needed, keeping the weight down as much as possible.

Samuel fell in love with the idea of a custom steel frame created by a Grand-Tour winner from this legendary tubeset.

So, he reserved frame No. 1 without even seeing it on photos!

Samuel’s Marosticana SLX was built to his measurements after Giovanni Battaglin designed the geometry. It was finished in blue cromovelato.

Then, Samuel and Alex started discussing the components for the complete bike.

With the exception of the Cinella 1A quill stem, Samuel wanted to build up his classic-looking frame with modern carbon parts.

We went for a 12-speed Campagnolo Record groupset, with 53-39 chainrings and an 11-29 cassette.

For the wheels, Samuel preferred the more traditional aesthetics of shallow rims. So, we settled on the Fulcrum Racing Zero carbon with Continental GP 5000 25-mm tires.

To make the bike even more comfortable, we selected the Dedaelementi Piega compact handlebar and the Dedaelementi Super Zero Carbon seat post.

We finished the build with a Selle Italia SLR Boost Superflow saddle and the Dedaelementi Presa tape with blue perforations that match the frame’s finish.
