Jhum or shifting cultivation is a primitive practice of cultivation in Tripura. Most of the small ethnic groups are familiar with this type of farming. Jhum is practiced on sloppy hills and the people involved in such cultivation are called Jhumia. Their life and culture depend to a great extent on jhum cultivation.
The practice involves clearing vegetative on slopes of hills, drying and burning it before monsoon. In jhuming, small holes are made throughout the field by broad blade knifes to sow a mixture of different crop seeds after the first rain in April. The main crops growning jhum include rice, maizw, ginger, millet, pumpkin, melon, stringbean, turmeric,sesame, cucumber, cotton, banana, etc. Crops are harvested in hills ssion as they ripe between July and December. This primitive practice of cultivation is an integral part of Jhumia life.
