It provided a mathematical expression that could replicate the Binding Energy Curve quite closely. However, such an expression could be made much more accurate (replicate the recurring peaks in BE Curve for small to medium mass numbers) by making certain addition of terms that are not derived from the Liquid Drop Model. For example:
4) The Asymmetry Term:
Since the particles inside a nucleus are fermions (both neutrons and protons) they arrange themselves in pairs as they fill up each energy level. This puts a restriction on the ratio of protons and neutrons in a stable nucleus. Usually stable nuclei have equal number of protons and neutrons. When certain nuclei deviate from this, it leads to instability that acts against the BE of that nucleus (since higher BE corresponds to higher stability)
5) Pairing Energy:
It is also seen that EVEN-EVEN nuclei (which contains even number or protons and even number of neutrons) are more stable compared to EVEN-ODD nuclei, which is again more stable compared to ODD-ODD nuclei. Pairing energy term is associated with that.
By incorporating both these terms, the BE expression obtained is known as the Semi-Empirical Binding Energy Formula. This leads to a more accurate representation of the BE curve (including the recurring peaks fir small mass numbers)
