We’ll Seun Heh Wark Te Dee (Joe Wilson, 1841 – 1875)
This was published by T and G Allan of Newcastle upon Tyne in Joe Wison’s ‘Tyneside Songs and Drolleries; Readings and Temperance Songs’
In the late 1860s the mechanics on Tyneside, England, tried to get their employers to give them a six-day week and a nine-hour day (shocking, we know). You won’t be surprised to learn that the employers thought the mechanics were being disgracefully lazy and greedy. The dispute became a strike so the bosses brought in workers from wherever they could, especially, in this case, Belgium
Joe Wilson’s song tells of the hardship of the strikers but they remain optimistic it would soon be over, particularly because they thought the strikebreakers were useless at the jobs and would be sent back to wherever they’d come from (‘Them foreign culls may take their hook from work they cannot do’)
