Made prior to WWII, this German Army training film shows some basic close combat techniques with hand grenades or Stielhandgranate. It shows how to throw the hand grenade and then immediately move and open fire, and / or how to take cover to avoid being hit after throwing, and shows how grenades can be used by a squad of advancing soldiers to clear enemy positions. The first title card is "throwing a hand grenade after failing to take out a target that evaded gunfire". At :30, a dummy is used to represent a moving target.
Note: This movie would have originally been shown with narration read by an officer as the film was projected, but we do not have the script for this particular film.
Stielhandgranate is the German term for "stick hand grenade" and generally refers to a prominent series of World War I and World War II–era German stick grenade designs, distinguished by their long wooden handles, pull cord arming and cylindrical warheads.
Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed.
For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
