Описание: Criminal defense attorney Neil Shouse explains how to transport firearms legally in California.

California Penal Code 25610 lays out specific regulations on how someone can legally transport firearms in their car or other vehicle. Like most states, convicted felons are not allowed to transport, or even possess firearms in California. But the state law goes further to also restrict minors under the age of 18 from transporting firearms, and it also restrict non-residents of California from transporting firearms.

For adults over the age of 18, who are California residents, and not banned from possessing a firearm due to a felony conviction, protective order, or other court order, the laws of how to transport a firearm legally in California vary by the type of firearm in question.

Handguns must be unloaded at all times during transport, and kept in either a locked container, or the trunk of the vehicle. Assault weapons must also be unloaded and in a locked container or trunk, but additionally assault weapons can only be transported to certain approved locations, such as repair shops, firing ranges, and gun exhibitions. Lastly non-concealable weapons such as shotguns and rifles also need to be unloaded during transport, but they are not required to be in a locked container like other weapons in California. However federal laws require even shotguns and rifles to be in a locked container, whenever someone goes within 1,000 feet of a K-12 school.
