+30,000 men ± 3700 men

2. Background to the battle:
At the beginning of May 1942, German and Italian troops, numbering about 90,000 men and 560 tanks, confronted along the "Gazala Line" about 110,000 soldiers and 840 armoured vehicles of the Allied armies (in short, soldiers from Great Britain and its colonies, the former British colonies (the dominions), Free France, and other Allied countries).

[Short explanation: "Gazala Line" = the Allied defence line from Gazala to Bir Hakeim]

The commander of the UK's 8th Army, lieutenant general Neil Ritchie, decided to deploy the 3700-strong 1st Free French Brigade in the Saharan desert at Bir Hakeim, the southernmost point of the Allied defence line (the Gazala Line). The mission of the Free French Forces was to delay the advance of German and Italian troops into North Africa. Therefore, the Free French, under the command of Brigadier General Marie-Pierre Koenig, dug trenches, built rock shelters, and laid mines in the vicinity of their defensive position at Bir Hakeim.

3. the Battle:
The Battle of Bir Hakeim took place from 27 May to 11 June 1942 in the Libyan desert (part of the Sahara). For more than 2 weeks, the Free Frenchmen succeeded in repelling the assaults of the Italian and German motorised armies.

But what happened on 11 June 1942?
And how did the battle finally end?

To be continued … 😉

Part 3 coming soon ! 😊
