Wynton Marsalis, one of the world’s greatest jazz trumpeters, visited Lagos, Nigeria featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra for the Runway Jazz convened by Amb. Afolabi Oke on October 5, 2025.
The following day, October 6, 2025, he was hosted to a private dinner and the Wole Jesutomi Sextet was contracted to perform and serenade him.
For 3 hours straight, Wole Jesutomi; bassist, composer, arranger and one of Africa's foremost Jazz musicians and his band performed his original Compositions and new arrangements of popular songs/ Jazz standards for Wynton Marsalis.
The climax of the night was a little History lesson where Wole informed Wynton about the real indigenous name of Lagos (EKO). The Portuguese gave EKO the name Lagos in the 15th century but the land has always been EKO even till today.
This was followed by the rendition of a classic Highlife medley of 4 songs composed by past highlife musicians about Lagos.
This special moment celebrates the connection between African Highlife and global Jazz, reminding the world where the rhythm began.
