Eddie very kindly brought a couple of UHF Tait 2000 series sets round with a T508 power supply & another Tait 2000 radio programmed on 4M amateur band. Thank you once again.
I couldn't get the first set to read or write to the programming software & I'll have a look into that in the future. The 2nd set programmed fine & then tuned up on the test set well. These are 25W radios. I set this one to 17W. I didn't seem able to get the CTCSS deviation as high as I'd have liked, but it works into our repeater (GB3GR) fine.
Upon testing it 'on the air' I found the received audio poor which hadn't been noticed when on the test gear using an external speaker. Chances are the internal speaker cone is rubbing & the snag is a simple as that.
