Americans are bulk buying groceries and melting salt as US braces for catastrophic winter storm

Описание: Over 200 million Americans are bracing for a catastrophic winter storm, which is forecast to bring heavy snow, freezing rain, and frigid temperatures to half the U.S. population. In Georgia and Texas, residents rushed to supermarkets to stock up on essentials like food and medicine, leaving some shelves nearly empty; memories of past disruptive storms drove the panic-buying spree.

Hardware stores also saw a massive surge in demand for snow-clearing supplies such as salt, shovels, and ice melt. Workers like landscape crew leader Ken Carter are pre-spreading salt to ensure public safety, while officials note this storm could be comparable to the severe 2009 blizzard.

The storm, which intensified on Friday, has caused 10,000 flight cancellations and over 84,000 power outages. To mitigate the impact, FEMA has pre-positioned 7 million meals, 600,000 blankets, and 300 generators in the expected storm-affected areas.
