A charity has warned that money borrowed to pay for Christmas could take years to repay.
A poll for the BBC found that a third of respondents who used credit to help get through Christmas and the holiday season said they were not confident about their ability to repay.
Advice charity StepChange said a debt hangover led to a surge in enquiries.
Many people were unable to adjust their spending habits or have a sufficient income as bills and prices soared.
"Christmas can put great financial pressure on people, causing some to rely on credit and spend more than they can afford. In some cases, this can lead to a debt hangover in the new year that may take many months or even years to repay," said Richard Lane, from StepChange.
Many turn to credit at expensive times of year because they have little in savings. A quarter of UK adults have less than £100 set aside in savings, leaving people vulnerable to rising and unexpected bills.
Shooting
A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a drive-by shooting outside a London church left a girl, seven, seriously injured.
The shooting occurred outside St Aloysius Church in Euston, where shots were fired from a moving vehicle on Saturday afternoon
Four women and a 12-year-old girl were also injured in the incident
The police said the seven-year-old remains in a stable but life-threatening condition.
The police said they are seeking information on a black Toyota
The shooting occurred during a memorial service attended by hundreds of people
The memorial service was for a 20-year-old girl and her mother who died from leukemia in November
The police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them urgently
Protest Powers
The UK government plans to widen police powers to allow officers to shut down protests before they cause serious disruption
The plans will be outlined in an amendment to the Public Order Bill, which will be introduced on Monday
The bill is meant to crack down on disruptive protests from groups like environmental activists Just Stop Oil, Insulate Britain, and Extinction Rebellion
The government says the changes will give police greater flexibility and clarity over when they can intervene
Human rights group Liberty called the proposals an attack on the right to protest
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, "The right to protest is a fundamental principle of our democracy, but this is not absolute. A balance must be struck between the rights of individuals and the rights of the hard-working majority to go about their day-to-day business."
