In the early 1980s, HIV was a mystery.
There was no treatment. No cure.
This archival footage documents some of the earliest HIV/AIDS cases in Haiti — the conversations between doctors and patients, the fear surrounding the diagnosis, and the work that would become Haiti’s response to the epidemic.
As Haitians were publicly labeled under the “4H” risk category, stigma spread alongside the disease. At the same time, Haitian doctors were studying what others did not yet understand.
