Congress MP Shashi Tharoor praised the Modi government’s unveiling of a bust of Chakravarti Rajagopalachari at Rashtrapati Bhavan. In a post on X, Tharoor recalled supporting Rajaji’s Swatantra Party during his student days and lauded his principles of liberal economics, social justice, and constitutional freedoms. The ceremony replaced the statue of British architect Edwin Lutyens with Rajagopalachari’s bust, marking him as the first and only Indian Governor-General. PM Narendra Modi described the move as an act of “mental decolonisation” to honour leaders who shaped India’s destiny. The event featured a rendition of all six stanzas of Vande Mataram and was attended by senior ministers including JP Nadda, S. Jaishankar, and Rajagopalachari’s family members.
