In this subscriber-only interview, Manisha Pande sits with historian Sam Dalrymple to discuss the forgotten breakups that shaped South Asia long before 1947. Sam also unpacks why Pakistan’s founder Muhammad Ali Jinnah remains one of the most misunderstood figures on both sides of the border.
Asked about his favourite character from the region, Sam calls Jinnah the “most interesting” and “most unexpected.” He explains that Jinnah “goes on a political journey that…we often don’t fully appreciate,” and that he’s “not the caricature that we’ve kind of made him out to be”.
Sam traces a transformation: the Jinnah of the 1910s, even awarded a trophy by Sarojini Naidu as the “great ambassador of Hindu Muslim unity”, versus the hardened Jinnah of the 1940s. He recounts how Jinnah left the Congress because “Gandhi is bringing too much religion into politics,” and how personal tragedy changed him irrevocably.
Drawing on Sheela Reddy’s Mr and Mrs Jinnah, Sam highlights how the suicide of Jinnah’s wife became “one of the most consequential moments” in his life, and why Nehru’s political move during Jinnah’s absence would leave a wound “he would never forgive.”
