Often patients transferred to our Emergency Department arrive with a catheter in place. Once the patient arrives, our team inspects it for placement and patency. Sometimes it does become necessary for the catheter to be replaced. The main reasons for replacement are: the catheter has pulled out in transport, it is no longer patent, a patient is febrile for no apparent reason or a different gauge is required. We will also replace a catheter if it has been in place for three or more days.
Before placing a catheter, please shave the entire area around the catheter. Also watch for clots. If you are transferring a patient and have placed a catheter, we recommend that you tape the catheter and wrap in place with vet wrap for transport. At VSC, we always add a T-set to our catheters. You can put that in place prior to transport using the vet wrap to keep it in place. Label the tape with catheter size, date and time placed directly on the tape. In this video, Gina, our ER Technician Supervisor, demonstrates our best practices.
