The Imaginations - Summer in New York
(7: Dunhill D-4092) 1967
This summer pop classic features Phil Sloan and Steve Barri,
Steve Barri on lead vocals. It was produced by Bones Howe,
a mainstay of Dunhill Records.
Steve Barri's real name is Steve Barry Lipkin.
He was born on February 23, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York.
His family moved to California when he was a child.
Aspiring to be a professional writer from a young age,
Steve Barri began submitting songs to Screen Gems.
Dore Records, which at the time represented popular groups
like the Teddy Bears and Jan & Dean, was moved to Screen Gems
by Lou Adler, who worked as an A&R there, when label owner
Lou Bedell (also known as Lew Bedell) sold his other label,
Era Records, to co-owner Herb Newman.
A&R stands for Artist & Repertoire and refers to the job of arranging
where and how artists are best placed. A&R, therefore, depends on
the breadth of one's network and is an important role that
affects a musician's success.
When Lou Adler began working at Screen Gems, he heard Steve Barri's
song "Suzie Jones." He liked it so much that Lou Adler approached
Warner Bros. in 1959.They also liked the song and decided
to release it as a duo.
Steve Barri (Steven Barry Lipkin)
Bernie Reed
Norty Beckman, who became their manager in May 1959,
sent them to the studio to record four songs, which Lou Adler handled.
Warner Bros. released "Suzie Jones / That's the Way The Cookie Crumbles"
as The Nortones in May 1959.
Side A credits: Barry, Reed, Brill
(Steven Barry Lipkin, Bernie Reed, Brill)
Side B credits: Lipkin, Rosen, Beckman
(Steven Barry Lipkin, Rosen, Norty Beckman)
Side B is a dance tune with a jungle beat and an effective saxophone
break during the interlude. Steve Barri ultimately released two singles
as The Nortones on Warner Bros. in 1959 and one on Stack Records
502 in May 1960. All but the last B-side were written by Steve Barri.
Steve Barri also made his debut as a teen pop singer,
but it was unsuccessful.
That same year, he formed The Story Tellers with his high school friend
Annette Kleinbard (aka Carol Connors), who had just finished with
the Teddy Bears. They released a single on Stack Records 500.
When they re-debuted in 1963, they added Carol Connors' sister to
form a trio, changing their name from The Story Tellers to
The Storytellers.
Steve Barri (Steven Barry Lipkin),
Carol Connors (Annette Kleinbard),
Cheryl Connors (Cheryl Kleinbard)
Cheryl later married Evan Meadow
(president of Windswept Pacific Entertainment Company).
Lou Adler liked the song, which was released on Ramarca Records 501,
and Dimension Records, a subsidiary of Screen Gems, bought it and
re-released it in August 1963. (Dimension D-1014)
They ultimately ended the Story Tellers project with their final single,
Capitol 5042, released on September 16, 1963.
Lou Adler was the man behind the scenes.
Steve Barri possessed the qualities of a teen pop singer, and many of
the lyrics he wrote in collaboration with Phil Sloan were written with
a teen pop perspective.
"Summer in New York" is a memory book of New York City that
only Phil Sloan and Steve Barri, both of whom were born in New York
and moved to California, could have. It's a masterpiece that makes
the most of Steve Barri's teenage vocals.
The twangy guitar reverb heard in the interlude, played on Phil Sloan's
signature Jazzmaster, is also excellent.
