Preserving classic radio drama, one story at a time.

"Aunts Aren't Gentlemen" is the final novel in P.G. Wodehouse’s beloved Jeeves and Wooster series, adapted for BBC Radio 4 in 2013 as a five-part reading by Blake Ritson. It’s a classic tangle of mistaken identities, romantic misfires, and feline sabotage—all delivered with Wodehouse’s signature wit.
Plot Summary
After developing mysterious pink spots on his chest, Bertie Wooster is advised by his doctor to seek fresh air in the countryside. He relocates to the sleepy village of Maiden Eggesford, where his formidable Aunt Dahlia is scheming to win a horse race by nobbling the competition—specifically, by kidnapping a cat that comforts a rival horse named *Potato Chip*.
Meanwhile, Bertie’s old acquaintance Orlo Porter, a champagne-loving communist, is trying to marry Vanessa Cook, whose father controls Orlo’s trust fund and disapproves of his politics. Vanessa, ever headstrong, decides Bertie would make a suitable substitute fiancé, much to his horror.
As Bertie fumbles through cat theft, romantic entanglements, and the wrath of Major Plank (who believes Bertie is a notorious criminal named Alpine Joe), Jeeves remains unflappable—untangling the chaos with quiet brilliance and a dash of legal finesse.
The radio adaptation preserves Wodehouse’s sparkling dialogue and Bertie’s delightfully mangled literary references, including his famous lament: “The trouble with aunts is, they are not gentlemen.”
