Continental Rearrangement Affects Ocean Chemistry & May Cause Ocean Anoxic Events! GEO GIRL

Описание: Continental arrangement and rearrangement has strongly affected oxygen concentrations and distribution in the oceans throughout Earth's history. In this video, I talk about the role of continental configuration in driving oxygenation and ocean anoxic events through Earth's history. The major factors controlling oceanic oxygen concentrations are atmospheric oxygen concentrations, atmospheric carbon dioxide fluctuations, primary productivity increases or decreases, and continental weathering & carbon burial rates. These are the factors that most studies concerning oxygenation events, like the GOE & NOE, or ocean anoxic events, like those during mass extinctions, focus on. However, some ocean anoxic events and oxygenations have occured in Earth's past independly of these factors, likely due to continental rearrangement which causes changes in ocean circulation. Ocean circulation changes can causes ocean stagnation and therefore, ocean anoxia (or a lack of oxygen in the ocean, especially in the deep ocean). Because ocean circulation can affect oxygen concentrations and distributions, we need to take this factor into consideration before we assume that our reconstructions of oceanic oxygen concentrations reflect atmospheric oxygen concentrations. Models indicate that contintental rearrangement may have contributed to the Permain-Triassic mass extinction ocean anoxic event, the Early and Late Cretaceous Ocean Anoxic Events (OAEs), and the Early Paleozoic oxygen instability and high evolutiona and extinction rates.
