scratchy hmx ?!?! and RBO ?? yessss pleaseee
as soon as these guys came out I was super stoked for them. if you love cherry scratch like I do, I suspect you were as excited as I was when these were dropped. nothing can ever replace cherry, but it is good to see something similar from one of the newer manufacturers. smoothness isn't everything..
SPECS
the sonja are a collaboration between sillyworks (hyacinth, gateron type R ) and HMX, featuring a brand new textured pa66 nylon top housing mold, pa66 bottom housing (new mold), a traditional rail bottom out pom stem and 22mm 52g spring. love to see this, traditional materials and full travel. sillyworks has really been putting out some awesome stuff lately.
SOUND
the scratch the sonja produce is immediately noticeable in hand and next to your ear, while typing however it is still audible but fairly subtle. not nearly as scratchy as cherry switches but certainly more scratchy than snow crashes or milky yellows. it is much closer to a lubed cherry switch.
the bottom out is also very full and poppy, kind of reminds me of milky yellows a bit. compared tot the snow crash the are not nearly as thin and quite a bit louder. I will attribute the fullness to the newer housing molds from hmx.
QUALITY
like the newer batch of snow crashes the sonja are completely dry on the stem and bottom housing rails, with only a touch of lube on the stem legs. overall, there was no weird noises that I could find- no ping or ticking noise. and ofc as to be expected from hmx, nearly zero stem and housing wobble. and with the newer housing molds, they also sit super secure in the plate now. I would honestly not even bother opening the sonja up, they are excellent stock. I did try lubing a few to see how it would affect the sound but nearly all the scratch was gone. would highly recommend just leaving them as is.
FINAL
overall, these switches came out almost exactly how I was expecting them to. all the good things hmx is known for, with a bit of that cherry signature sound. now, will these run cherry out of business? loll ofc not. in fact I think this further validates what cherry is doing, sticking to a few offerings and doing it well. although they are not perfect from the factory like hmx switches, there is something to be said about modding a switch yourself and the satisfaction that comes with it. all that to say, cherry is still very different and will hold its own but these are certainly a refreshing take from hmx and sillyworks. if you love cherry switches I would definitely recommend checking these guys out.
thanks for stopping by and I hope the video and review was helpful! 💙
