Product Review: Mock Sash Windows (Triple Glazed Noise Reduction)

Why would I want that? I hear you ask.

Well, in some cases you will only get planning permission to install windows that maintain the same aesthetic as your current frames. Or it might just be personal preference. But - and here's the thing - our mock sash windows deliver the best noise reduction values of all of our products, considerably better than current sash replacements which cannot support triple glazing. You get the look of traditional sash and the superior noise reduction of tilt and turn units.

So to the mock sash windows themselves. In this video you can see the triple glazed 51 dB mock sash window. It features:

**10.8mm acoustic glass exterior
**6mm argon cavity
**14.4mm acoustic glass internal
**12mm argon cavity
**8.8mm acoustic glass interior

The reason that we use different thicknesses of glass is to combat the coincidence frequency - where the natural resonance of the glazing will actually amplify the sound rather than dampening it. By employing glazing of different thicknesses, the two other pieces of glazing will pick up the slack where one piece of glass drops off.

To dispel a commonly held myth - triple glazed units do not inherently reduce noise more than double glazed windows. In fact, some will perform worse if the coincidence frequency isn't addressed. The reason these mock sash windows work better than soundproof double glazing is because the glazing itself is designed to prevent sound transmission. And by increasing the amount of noise reduction glass and air cavities, you're going to see a reduction in noise.

Now, onto the argon filling. Another myth is that argon will reduce noise transference. This isn't true. Argon is chosen for its thermal insulation properties - it has 34% lower thermal conductivity than air. What is important here is the actual SIZE of the cavity itself. You see, gases are poor conductors of sound because their molecules are spread further apart. In fact, sound travels about 4 times faster in water than it does in air. So a larger air gap means the sound is further slowed, losing its energy and quieting.

We choose the actual size of the cavity depending on the noise complaint itself, as well as the client's individual preferences. Not everyone wants the thickest windows possible, and we can make compromises on thickness in order to accommodate for design in areas where noise pollution isn't too bad.

Finally, the mock sash window is fitted with a multi-point locking system which allows you to open it from the sides or from the top. With restrictors installed, the window will only open a small amount, ventilating the room sufficiently when opened whilst ensuring that they're child-safe.
