In this very basic test, I wanted to find out if honeybees will show any preference for fresh filtered water with salt added.

3 - One Quart Entrance Feeders
Each Quart was filled with "PUR" filtered fresh water from a well.
Each Quart has two drops of blue food coloring added for visibility.
The Quart far left has one teaspoon of table salt added and thoroughly mixed in.
The Quart far right has two teaspoons of table salt added and thoroughly mixed in.
The Quart at Center has only fresh filtered water with no salt added.
Weather conditions were warm and lots of recent rain storms, so there was plenty of water in the environment. Many tree species are loaded with nectar and pollen. A 20' tall flowering crab tree is shown at the end.
As to why honeybees have a need for salted water, it's anyone's guess at this point. I personally don't know how it helps them or why they would show a preference for it.
