The story of Turbinia is one of the greatest engineering achievements in British maritime history — and it all began in Newcastle upon Tyne.
Built on the River Tyne in the 1890s by Sir Charles Parsons, Turbinia was the world’s first ship powered by steam turbines. At a time when ships relied on heavy piston engines, Turbinia shocked the world by reaching speeds of over 34 knots and proving that turbine power was the future of marine propulsion.
In this video from 55 Degrees North, we explore:
⚓ How Turbinia was invented
⚙️ Why her turbine engines changed ship design forever
🌊 Her legendary dash through the Royal Navy fleet
🏛️ How she was saved and preserved in Newcastle
🌍 Why her legacy still matters today
From humiliating the Royal Navy at Spithead to inspiring the greatest ocean liners ever built, Turbinia’s story is one of bold innovation and North East engineering genius.
📍 Today, Turbinia can be seen at the Discovery Museum in Newcastle — a proud symbol of British industrial heritage.
