Real Time 3D TEE image of the mitral and aortic valve
The normal mitral valve has an anterior and posterior leaflets that are attached at the bases to a fibromuscular ring, and their free edges by the subvavlular apparatus. The anterior leaflet is semi-circular and larger in size, but narrower bases only attaches to 1/3rd of the annular ring. It is divided into the A1, A2, and A3 scallops. The posterior leaflet is a quadrangular shape attached to approximately 2/3rd of the annular ring and divided into 3 scallops: P1, P2, and P3. The A1/P1 scallops are anterolateral (closest to left atrial appendage and anterior commissure).
