Precious Lord - Octet Reunion. One of the staple Octet tunes, l've heard it many times over, and had hoped that perhaps one day I'd get to sing it, under Dr. William Chunestudy. This past weekend I finally got that opportunity, alongside my mother, Stephanie Mayang. I asked Doc (as I learned the members called him) if I could drop to the low Bb at the very end, which he gave the go-ahead. He said he had always loved the idea of a low note there, but never had the bass to pull it off. No diss to the other basses! Bb1 is a very difficult note to project, and is known as the oktavist standard. As I edited the footage this afternoon, the lyrics really hit hard as I learned of the passing of my Uncle Daryl today. He had always been such a kind and friendly soul throughout my youth and young adulthood. I sat in solemn solidarity, and let the lyrics wash over me as I listened to the beautiful tune.
"Precious Lord, take my hand. Lead me on, let me stand. I am tired, I am weak, I am worn. Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light. Take my hand, Lord, and lead me home.
When my way grows drear, precious Lord linger near. When my life is almost gone, at the river, Lord, I'll stand. Guide my feet and hold my hand. Take my hand, Lord, and lead me home."
