In this video, I begin by summarizing some of the key terms and ideas that were discussed in Part 1, before outlining the main arguments in Daniel Callahan's essay, "When Self-Determination Runs Amok."
Callahan considers four common arguments that are given in support of the claim that euthanasia (of various kinds) is morally permissible. Proponents of euthanasia commonly argue that:
1. The practice should be allowed out of respect for patient autonomy,
2. The practice is permissible given that there is not a moral distinction between "killing" and "letting die,"
3. The practice will not lead to seriously negative consequences, and
4. The practice is consistent with the goals/purpose of medicine.
In his essay, Callahan considers and responds to each of these four arguments, claiming that each of them is a failure.
