Rammed earth construction is a fascinating technique for building using natural raw materials such as earth, chalk, lime, or gravel.
Here’s how it works:

First... The materials:
The process involves compacting a damp mixture of subsoil with suitable proportions of sand, gravel, clay, silt, and sometimes a stabilizer such as lime or cement, into a formwork an externally supported frame or mold.

Second... The Compaction:
The soil mix is poured into the formwork to a depth of 10 to 25 centimeters or 4 to 10 inches and then compacted to approximately fifty per cent of its original volume.
This compaction is done iteratively in batches or courses, gradually building up the wall to the desired height.

Third... The Tamping:
Traditionally, tamping was done manually using a long ramming pole.
However, modern construction systems can employ pneumatically powered tampers.
The compressive strength of rammed earth increases as it cures.

Fourth... Formwork Removal:
Once the wall is complete, the formwork can be removed.
If a surface texture such as wire brushing, carving, or mold impression is desired, it must be done within approximately one hour after completion because the walls become too hard to work on afterward.

Fifth... Strength and Curing:
The walls are strong enough to support themselves immediately after formwork removal.
Cement-stabilized rammed earth is cured for a minimum of twenty-eight days.
In modern rammed earth buildings, the walls are constructed on conventional footings or a reinforced concrete slab base.

Global Use:
Edifices made of rammed earth can be found on every continent.
They exist in various environments, including temperate, wet, semiarid desert, montane, and tropical regions.
The availability of suitable soil and a building design appropriate for local climatic conditions are key factors in favor of using this method.
