Bangladesh’s new political chapter opened with unexpected turbulence as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party refused to take a second oath linked to a proposed Constitution Reform Council. During the swearing-in at the Jatiya Sangsad in Dhaka, BNP lawmakers pledged only as Members of Parliament, rejecting interim leader Muhammad Yunus’s proposal to bind MPs to sweeping constitutional changes backed by a referendum. Senior BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed said the council has no standing in the existing Constitution.
