Stateline Speedway, located in Busti, NY, is a historic dirt oval that opened in 1956, founded by Leonard Briggs and friends on an old farm, becoming a significant regional racing venue that hosted a NASCAR Cup race in 1958 and saw new owners in late 2024, continuing its legacy of dirt track racing for modifieds and late models.
Origins & Early Years (1950s-60s)
Founding: In April 1956, Leonard Briggs, Lloyd Williams, Marv Thorpe, and brothers Don & Jerry Frank bought land in Busti, NY, to build Stateline Speedway.
First Race: The inaugural event took place on July 21, 1956, with Emory Mahan winning the first feature in a '55 Chevy.
NASCAR Connection: The track hosted a single NASCAR Cup Series race in 1958, won by Shorty Rollins.
Early Classes: Modifieds and late models were popular early on, with the track known for its fast, third-mile dirt oval.
Key Moments & Eras
1976 Riot: A major riot erupted after a concert promoter absconded with funds, leading to the stage and concessions being burned, though the track was rebuilt.
Legacy & Preservation: The track became a staple for local racing, with figures like legendary driver Dutch Hoag launching careers there.
New Ownership (2024): After decades under previous families (including the Scotts and Turners), Bill and Lisa Catania purchased the track in November 2024, aiming for long-term success.
